Ajit Panja critical

KOLKATA: Former Union minister and Trinamool Congress leader Ajit Panja (72) is battling for life at Peerless Hospital. he veteran politician,who has been suffering from buccal cancer
(cancer of the mouth) for long, was hospitalized on October 25 with severe health complications. His condition started deteriorating on Tuesday night.

“Ajit Panja was admitted to the ICU in a very critical condition. A medical team is monitoring him. We are administering oxygen at the highest concentration. We hope for the best but his condition is very serious,” medical superintendent Dr S Mitra said.

Mamata Banerjee and other Trinamool Congress leaders rushed to Peerless Hospital late at night, as did Panja’s immediate family members, including his son and daughter, and relatives. Doctors said the situation had become critical since the cancer had spread to other organs.

A prominent lawyer, Panja graduated from Scottish Church College before studying in London. He was a member of the state Assembly in the 1970s and 1980s and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1984 on a Congress ticket.

Panja held portfolios such as information and broadcasting before joining Trinamool Congress in 2001.
