Allow Central services exams in Marathi: Deshmukh

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said on Saturday that his government will ask the Centre requesting permission for Maharashtrian students to give examinations for their recruitment to Central services in Marathi, in addition to English and Hindi.

"I had sought information about the recent Railway recruitment exam (where MNS members attacked north Indian candidates who had appeared for the exam at a Mumbai centre)," Deshmukh said. Around 19 percent of the applicants were Maharashtrians, he added.

He was addressing a felicitation function organised by the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee here last night on the occasion of the State government completing four years in office.

Deshmukh said there was a need for the exam to be simultaneously conducted in Marathi as it was the official language of the state and also mother tongue of locals. "Such a facility for writing exams in regional language is already available for UPSC examinations," he said.

Contrary to the popular perception that outsiders were snatching away jobs of locals, Deshmukh recounted his visit to a plant run by an automobile major in Pune where he found that over 80 percent of the people employed there were Maharashtrians.

"We cannot deny that there are some works which Marathi 'manoos' doesn't want to do", Deshmukh said in a veiled attack on MNS campaign against north Indians.
