
The 92 recipients were bestowed with the Rajyotsava awards for their outstanding contribution in the field of science and technology, agriculture, literature, music, theatre, folk, fine arts, medicine, journalism, education, sports and social services among others. The first to receive this year's award was Dr S K Shivakumar of ISRO.
The award comprises Rs 1 lakh, 20 grams of gold and a citation.
Speaking on the occasion, Yeddyurappa said that this year's Rajyotsava is a special event and historical moment for us as Kannada has been accorded the classical language status.
"Karnataka being a state of rich heritage and culture, the classical language status for Kannada should have been accorded long ago. At last, it has come at the right time, a day before the 52nd Kannada Rajyotsava," he added. Talking about the plans to celebrate the classical language status for Kannada, the CM said that a twoday programme would be held in the city by the monthend to celebrate the historical moment and senior Kannada activists will be honoured on the occasion.
"Government orders have already been given to all the district administrations to celebrate the event across the state. Various Kannada activists, senior Kannada litterateurs and Kannadigas have fought for the cause of classical language status. Achievers who have been left out for this year's Rajyotsava award will be considered for the next year's award," he said.
Yeddyurappa announced various programmes for research and development of Kannada and promised that his government will put Karnataka on the global map, in terms of development.
Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Shobha Karandlaje, Minister for Transport R Ashok, Minister for Science and Technology Katta Subramanya Naidu, Chairman of the Legislative Council Veeranna Mattikatti, Kannada and Culture Secretary Jayaramaraje Urs and Kannada and Culture Department Director Manu Baligaar were among the others present.
