HYDERABAD: Activists of AP Youth Congress staged a dharna in front of the office of a Telugu daily, Andhra Jyothi, here today in protest against an article published against Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy.
In its yesterday’s edition, the daily had announced that it would carry a series of reports on the functioning of Rajasekhara Reddy’s government under the banner, Rajasekhara Charitramu. The first in the series was published today.
Anticipating trouble, a large number of police personnel were deployed near the newspaper’s office in Jubilee Hills in the morning. More than 100 activists of Greater Hyderabad Congress Committee (GHCC) and Youth Congress gathered near the newspaper’s office and raised slogans against the management for publishing `anti-Rajasekhara Reddy’ reports. They later staged a `semi-nude protest’ and set some copies of the newspaper ablaze. As the protest continued, police took 46 agitators into preventive custody, took them to the Jubilee Hills police station and released them later.
In a counter-demonstration, activists of the TDP's youth wing Telugu Yuvata protested in front of the Sakshi newspaper’s office at Guntur. The newspaper is being run by Rajasekhara Reddy’s son, Jagan Mohan Reddy. The protesters alleged that the daily was publishing `baseless’ reports against the TDP.
