
Hyundai is considering powering its entry-level car Santro, with a smaller 800cc engine and GM is considering an alternate smaller 800cc engine to power Spark.
Hyundai and GM, together account for a third of Asia’s second-largest small car market outside Japan. They have decided to alter engine specifications which would have increased agreement with emission norms, besides ensuring higher fuel-efficiency.
Sources indicate that car manufacturers are working on ways to bring the costs down to Maruti 800cc level. The small car market is dominated by Maruti Suzuki having around 47% of the car market, followed by Hyundai Motors and Tata Motors. The urge in competing for supremacy in the small car market is because most of the first-time buyers and young employees form a big part of the small car market and its growth story.
