tata nano: GM & Hyundai to come up with small cars

The competition for Tata Nano has intensified with Hyundai and General Motors India actively considering plans to come out with smaller engines for their entry-level models.

Hyundai is considering powering its entry-level car Santro, with a smaller 800cc engine and GM is considering an alternate smaller 800cc engine to power Spark.

Hyundai and GM, together account for a third of Asia’s second-largest small car market outside Japan. They have decided to alter engine specifications which would have increased agreement with emission norms, besides ensuring higher fuel-efficiency.

Sources indicate that car manufacturers are working on ways to bring the costs down to Maruti 800cc level. The small car market is dominated by Maruti Suzuki having around 47% of the car market, followed by Hyundai Motors and Tata Motors. The urge in competing for supremacy in the small car market is because most of the first-time buyers and young employees form a big part of the small car market and its growth story.
