bloodsuckers: Churchill, "Hebrew Bloodsuckers" And Islam

Winston Churchill is the legendary war time British Prime Minister who fought against Nazi Germany. He is considered to be one of Britain's greatest leaders and is revered both in North America and the British Isles.

During his long political career he witnessed the demise of the British Empire an empire that many had thought would never end so much so that it was said that the sun will never set on the British empire.

More recently especially in the blogsphere Winston Churchill has become famous for something quite different. He is considered by many as articulating the in the late 1800's the reality of Islam and its evils. Churchill commented but Muslims during the British imperial conquest of Sudan. That passage has now become a staple diet for most anti-Islam bigots:

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property — either as a child, a wife, or a concubine — must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die: but the influence of the religion paralyses the social developement of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytising faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science — the science against which it had vainly struggled — the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome." This quote from the 1880's puts another nail into the lie that the west's "problems" with Islam only began after September 2001 as can be seen the utter disdain for anything Islamic has been present in Christian culture since the time of the first anti-Islam polemicist.

Some of those that use and support Churchill's quote to about "Mohammadanism" come from the Jewish faith. They support Churchill as a man who stood up to the tyranny of Nazism and also understood the threat that Islam posed to the world. The truth about Churchill is not as clear cut as it may seem at first. A new document has come to light which shows Churchill in a different light, a light that many Jewish people will find very uncomfortable and one that smacks of anti-semitism:

"Winston Churchill suggested Jewish people were "partly responsible for the antagonism" that saw them branded "Hebrew bloodsuckers", according to an article made public for the first time today.

The 1937 document, "How the Jews Can Combat Persecution", was unearthed by Dr Richard Toye, a Cambridge University historian. Written three years before Churchill became Prime Minister, the article has apparently lain unnoticed in the Churchill archives at Cambridge since the early months of the Second World War.

The article argues that "the wickedness of the persecutors" was not the sole reason for the ill-treatment of Jews down the ages. Churchill criticised the "aloofness" of Jewish people from wider society and urged them to make the effort to integrate themselves."

In the piece Churchill criticised Jewish employers in the clothing trade and their use of sweated labour. Because refugee Jews escaping the Nazi regime in Germany were willing to work for lower wages, this was in his view "bad citizenship" because it forced English workers out of jobs - and "bad policy" as it created anti-Semitism. Churchill says: "The central fact which dominates the relations of Jew and non-Jew is that the Jew is 'different'. He looks different. He thinks differently. He has a different tradition and background."

He then goes on to criticise Jewish moneylenders: "Every Jewish moneylender recalls Shylock and the idea of the Jews as usurers. And you cannot reasonably expect a struggling clerk or shopkeeper, paying 40 or 50 per cent interest on borrowed money to a 'Hebrew Bloodsucker', to reflect that almost every other way of life was closed to the Jewish people." If Churchill's analysis of Muslim people is to be accepted as the "Gospel truth" like some anti-Islam bigots would like us to believe surely then his analysis of the Jewish people must also be given the same credibility, if not why not ?

In support of Churchill his official biographer has a rather innocent explanation for the discovery of the document:

"Sir Martin Gilbert, Churchill's biographer, says there is another reason for the anti-Semitic language: "Churchill had a ghostwriter who was a member of the Mosleyite party. This article was the only serious subject the ghostwriter was asked to tackle, in which he went over the top in the use of his language." (Source: The Independent)
