Florida's Lotto Sales and the Economy

Officials with the Florida lotto say ticket sales were down eight percent from last year before the holidays. The Florida Lotto says the same decrease has also been seen in other states.

However, the lotto says lately there has been a steady increase because many people are buying lotto tickets as holiday gifts. Cynthia Portalatin, a Tallahassee resident, remembers how lotto tickets were a hit at her office. "My old job, we'd do a white elephant gift exchange where you'd get to trade presents and a couple of people would always bring in lotto tickets and it was great fun because we'd fight for it. Everybody wants a lotto ticket because you never know." said Portalatin.

In 2009, Powerball will join the Florida lotto family, which officials say will also help ticket sales. Florida will have its first Powerball drawing on January 7th.
