Actress Konkona SenSharma, who will soon be seen in Madhuri Dixit’s comeback dance flick, has always been one with the environment and with a soft corner for underprivileged kids.So much so that as a little girl herself, she would pester filmmaker mum Aparna Sen to buy only CRY (Child Relief & You) cards at Diwali because this money went to God’s lesser children.
“As I grew up, my heart went out to underprivileged children who had no access to education and who would not even get one meal a day,” revealed the actress. It is this same concern she shares today for global warming. And since she is able to, Konkona strives to do all she can for a greener environment.
Naturally, when Indian clothing giant Cottonworld started promoting cotton bags as an alternative to plastic bags, Konkana leaped to be of assistance. “Not only is this an environment-friendly initiative but it also aids the cause of child rights in India as part proceeds from the bags go to CRY,” said Konkona who’s a cotton kurti girl herself.
Lavin Lekhraj, partner, Cottonworld, is delighted with her support. “We have called this initiative ‘2 causes in one bag’. As for 20 years, Cottonworld has always stood for natural clothing. With global-warming taking on such alarming proportions, we thought about how a green brand such as ours could contribute. By using cloth bags, we are replacing nearly 200,000 plastic bags a year. The cotton bags will be made available at all Cottonworld stores across the country,” he said.
