Kanawha County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Johnny Rutherford says police believe 22-year-old Shana Cowley was arguing with her boyfriend, Timothy Joseph White, when the incident occurred Oct. 30 on Derricks Creek Road. Cowley was a passenger in White's 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Rutherford says White told police that Cowley opened the SUV's door and jumped out.
"The statement was made that she opened the door and jumped out under her own power," Rutherford said.
Rutherford said White agreed to take a polygraph test and passed.
"The polygraph supports his statements," Rutherford said.
The incident happened not far from Cowley's home. She was conscious at the scene but died after being rushed to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Division.
Findings of the investigation will be turned over to the Kanawha County prosecutor's office.
Cowley was a student at West Virginia State University and the reigning Miss South Charleston. She was a 2005 graduate of Sissonville, where she was homecoming queen, senior class president and head cheerleader.
