Student activists eyeing seats in the Ranchi University Students’ Union but did not start campaigning as yet have reasons to cheer.
The university is likely to postpone the election dates to December. A final decision regarding it would be taken on November 11 when all the principals of the constituent colleges will meet at the university premises. The meeting would be chaired by vice-chancellor of the university A.A. Khan.
University authorities say vacation for festivals and Youth fest are the reasons for postponing the elections.
“The decision depends not on us but on principals of the constituent colleges. A reason for postponing the elections is to prepare for the Youth festival. The colleges would want to devote themselves in its preparation. The election dates may be postponed to second week of December,” said Khan.
The Ranchi University Students’ Union election is suppose to take place on November 25 but as the colleges will re-opened after the vacations tomorrow, the student activists say they would hardly get the time to campaign.
“Vacation for Durga Puja, Diwali, Chhath have taken over a month’s time. The college will again remain close on November 13 and 14. In such a situation how can we prepare for the elections. As no nominations have been filed we have to take anybody from the college and make him stand for election just for the heck of it,” said Parvinder Singh, the state president of National Students Union of India.
Interaction with the freshers, investigating the background of the nominees, making nominees aware of the election agenda and plans could not be carried out to the vacation. “The first-year students have joined college from September and if they do not know the college properly how can they vote,” said an activist.
“Unlike other universities, RU students hardly have any enthusiasm in conducting or taking part in students’ elections. One year has passed and hardly any development has taken place in any of the colleges. However, we have decided our strategy and are ready for the elections as we know there is no other way,” said Amitabh Sinha, the Kolhan in charge of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
