Obama Girls Start at Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C.

Today is the first day of school for Malia and Sasha Obama at Sidwell Friends School. Currently staying at the Hay Adams Hotel (named after Hay Adams, a descendent of John Adams) during their transition into the White House, they continue their adventure in DC with Sidwell Friends-- a prestigious private school which has been attended by the likes of many notable names and past presidential kids, including Chelsea Clinton. The Sidwell school is a Quaker school but welcomes students of varying backgrounds.

CNN reports that Sasha, age 7, is attending the elementary campus at Sidwell in Bethesda, MD, while Malia, age 10, is off to the middle school campus in DC.

The Obamas stay at the Hay Adams Hotel for a couple of weeks, which is reportedly (by Bossip, courtesy of People) right across from the White House. It's a 5-star hotel and while the Obamas are no strangers to hotels (they've been "living out of" them for virtually two years now), I have heard that the fourth floor of this hotel is haunted by Clover Adams, who was the wife of Hay Adams. In any event, Bossip/People goes on to detail the emotional reaction of Barack Obama to leaving his home in Chicago to come to DC and one can imagine that Michelle, Malia, and Sasha-- while excited about their new journey to the White House-- share in his sadness.

They feature as some of their high points Quaker values, prizing diversity, academic excellence, and environmental stewardship. The site makes the school appear very friendly and even casual, and while I'm sure it's a very positive and enriching environment, it all comes with quite a heavy tuition price. For the fact that it is costly and is considered to be at least somewhat exclusive of a school-- not just anybody can go there-- I'm not sure how truly diverse it can be. I wish Malia and Sasha luck and wellness in their new educational experience and I hope they make lots of nice, fabulous, genuine new friends.
