Helen Thomas Delivers Again
It's little surprise that one of the toughest questions President Obama faced during an hour-long press conference on Monday came from none other than Helen Thomas (she's been reporting from the White House since before he was born). It was also no surprise that Barack dodged the question almost as well as his predecessor would have.
He got a big laugh when he called on the veteran journalist, "Helen, this is my inaugural moment here. I'm really excited!" Thomas stumbled a bit, but she delivered a crucial blow. Her first question was not clearly communicated; it addressed Pakistan's complicity in maintaining safe havens for "so-called terrorists" on the Afghanistan border. The second question was short and sweet, and it was clear:
"Do you know of any country in the Middle East that has nuclear weapons?"
As Obama began to stutter his affirmative answer to the first question, I'm ashamed to say that I found myself looking forward to his second answer and even briefly wondering what it would be. Everyone knows that Israel has a sizable nuclear stockpile, but US government officials have continually acquiesced to the demands of the Lobby (and the inhumane idea it represents) - they lie or play dumb.
While Obama didn't completely ignore the issue of nuclear weapons in the Middle East, he may as well have. The world was once again reminded that as far as the United States government is concerned, nothing has changed on the question of Palestine. Predictably, the answer was more of the same...
"With respect to nuclear weapons, I don't want to speculate. What I know is this: that if we see a nuclear arms race in a region as volatile as the Middle East, everyone will be in danger. And one of my goals in to prevent nuclear proliferation generally. I think that it's important for the United State in concert with Russia to lead the way on this. And, you know, I've mentioned this in conversations with the Russian president Mr. Medvedev to let him know that it is important for us to at least start the conversations about how we can start reducing our nuclear arsenals in an effective way, so that..."
By now Ms. Thomas had enough. She tried getting Barack to actually answer her question. He gave her the finger and raised his voice slightly...
"so that we then have the standing to go to other countries and start stitching back together the non-proliferation treaties that frankly have been weakened over the last several years. OK?"
Obviously, that was not OK. Helen Thomas tried asking him for some "particulars" but Obama chose to ignore her. Unfortunately, the average American will continue to languish in ignorance.
He mentioned the potential dangers of a nuclear arms race in the region, but he failed to acknowledge that the state of Israel is directly responsible for making that a reality - by stockpiling enough nuclear weapons to leave everything in ruins.
Finally - in case you Obama fans want to come to his defense - Israel never signed on to any "non-proliferation treaty" in the first place, so there is nothing to stitch back as far as the Zionist state is concerned. This was another pathetic example of the president of the United States doing the bidding of a foreign country that presents the biggest threat to its national security and that of the entire world... and I'm not talking about Iran.
