Gwen Stefani: 'Now That U Got It'

Released on Monday, October 8 2007

Gwen Stefani's rampant genre-hopping – initially so gleeful, so vibrant, so delightfully cheeky – is starting to seem a bit desperate. After trying her hand at power balladry, Chairman of the Board-style soul-pop, hip-hop/show tune mash-ups, dancefloor-friendly electropop and an atonal marching band strut, she's decided to go all Caribbean Carnival on us. We know this because 'Now That U Got It' features sirens, whistles and – wait for it! – a rap from Bob Marley's son.
Producer Swiss Beatz lays down an appealingly sauntering hip-hop beat - it has a slight whiff of cheap hash to it, if we're honest - but there’s no getting away from the song's uninspired chorus, which is as flaccid as an octogenarian drunkard's pee-pee. Gwen Stefani urgently needs to reawaken her pop smarts, and we know just the trio of Californian ska-punks for the job.
