Funeral For A Friend: 'The Great Wide Open'

Released on Monday, October 1 2007

How to make a rock anthem - lesson one. Grab yourself a guitar and bass and let them dual it out over a series of frantic riffs and menacing chord changes. Chuck in a set of booming drum whacks. Squeeze together some overly-emotional vocals and melodramatic lyrics (Something along the lines of "The rush of the flood / sends the blood / To my head" will do). Add a generous dash of humongous "woah-o-oahs" into the mix until it's just about done and then top it off with some call-response audience participation moments that can only work in venues big enough to host an Olympic ceremony. You should now be the proud owner of the new Funeral For A Friend single, 'The Great Wide Open'.

While it may lack the sneering, viciousness of some of their earlier works, 'The Great Wide Open' can't be knocked for its aspirations - its practically got homecoming gig at Millennium Stadium stamped on its forehead. Although the Welsh post-hardcore screamers may not be quite big enough to fill up football grounds yet, if they have a couple more of these chest-beating anthems locked up in a cupboard somewhere they might not be too far off.
