WE'LL STERILLISE ALL STRAYS IN ONE YEAR BMC

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set for itself a stringent one-year deadline for sterilisation of the over five lakh stray dogs in the city.

For this unprecedented and intensive drive, they have selected 12 NGOs, each of which will have to do 100 sterilisations in a day. This means the BMC has set an overall target of 1,200 sterilisations every day.

Nearly 16 NGOs had approached the BMC for the work and out of that, 12 have been selected. The sterilisaton work is expected to start in a month.

Every dog that is sterilised will have a mark placed on a certain part of his/her body.

To ensure that the NGOs meet the target, the BMC has set up six zonal committees to monitor the sterilisation drive.

The committees will comprise veterinary experts, civic officials and members of NGOs. The committees will also do surprise checks to see that work is proceeding at the desired pace.

“Due to the increasing population of strays, cases of dog-bites have increased in the last few years. To curb this menace, we decided to undertake this massive drive”, Jairaj Thanekar, BMC’s chief health executive officer, said.

Asked why the drive was going to be so intensive, Thanekar said, “There has been pressure on BMC from the public and the court. The problem of stray dogs has been a perennial one, and we need to find a solution.”

He said the BMC had identified plots at Deonar and Mulund that will be handed over to some of the NGOs on the basis of an 11-month agreement for the setting up of sterilisation centres. “In return, BMC will charge Rs 1 per month from NGOs as rent,” said Thanekar.

The NGOs
The NGOs selected for the drive are Welfare of Stray Dogs, All India Animal Welfare Association, Ahimsa, In Defence of Animals, International Animal Rescue, Save Our Stray, Plant and Animal, Avishkar Foundation, Sahayog Vidyarthi Sangh, Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Karuna. They will work according to the terms and conditions of the BMC.

Shreja Shah, member of In Defence of Animals said they had been asking BMC to undertake a massive drive. “We have got two big vehicles for this drive and we need to construct more dog canals to sterilise dogs,” she noted.
