Preview:
John Cena vs. Randy Orton (Last Man Standing Match for the WWE Championship)

Randy Orton’s master plan didn’t go exactly as planned at Unforgiven. He had hoped his attack on John Cena’s father would have left The Champ so blind with rage that he would have been prone to a fateful mistake and loss of the WWE Championship. But that didn’t happen, and two enraged Cenas left him unconscious – and without the title.

Cena’s dad, who had suffered a concussion a month earlier during an attack from Orton, wanted to show the Legend Killer that he messed with the wrong man. He gave him a taste of his own medicine (and boot) with a punt to his skull. That only rubbed salt in Orton's wound because The Champ had gotten disqualified after he refused to stop beating Orton in the corner. These factors infuriated Acting GM Jonathan Coachman because the only way to win a championship in most WWE matches is by pinfall or submission. Coachman has immediately signed Cena and Orton to a rematch at No Mercy on October 7 – in a Last Man Standing Match.

Cena and his dad clearly could not control their emotions at Unforgiven. The Champ was so furious over Orton attacking his father that he didn’t care about winning or losing the match. All that mattered was making Orton suffer – and that’s why he slapped the STFU on the third-generation star and refused to let go until his dad punted the Legend Killer.

For Orton, his mind games with Cena may have backfired. At No Mercy, The Champ can use anything and everything he wants to torture and leave Orton motionless – and without the WWE Championship. Cena will not be handcuffed by any rules. Orton has awakened a bloodthirsty vengeful monster in the WWE Champion, who, as illustrated by his vicious attack on the now-convalescing Raw GM William Regal, is capable of hurting people.

However, Cena’s inability to contain his rage may also lead to his own demise at No Mercy. There is a reason why Orton is called the Legend Killer – he is remorseless, cold, and sadistic and will do anything to get what he wants. That’s why he attacked Cena’s dad to begin with. That’s why he has left a long trail of WWE legends and Superstars who have been sidelined with career-ending injuries. Ask Shawn Michaels, Rob Van Dam and Dusty Rhodes what Orton is capable of. A Last Man Standing Match may be just the license Orton needs to both capture the WWE Championship and put John Cena on the shelf.

Who will be the last man standing at No Mercy? As the song goes, you can’t always get what you want. But sometimes you get what you need. Will Cena get what he wants and needs at No Mercy – complete revenge on Orton? Or will Orton get satisfaction in the form of the WWE Championship? The only way to find out is to check out No Mercy, live on pay-per-view on Sunday, October 7 at 8/7
