New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday directed police to provide protection to the newly-wed daughter and son-in-law of Telugu actor Chiranjeevi after the couple alleged threat to their lives from the bride’s family.
The couple alleged they faced threats since they married against the wishes of their families.
“Delhi police would be kept informed by the petitioners (Chiranjeevi’s daughter Srija and son-in-law Shirish Bhardwaj) about their residential address in the capital. The police shall give necessary protection so that their lives face no danger,” Justice S N Dhingra said.
The couple was present in the courtroom during the hearing.
In their petition, they cited the recent case of Rizwanur Rehman and expressed apprehension that the Kolkata incident might be replicated on them.
No threat to Srija, Shirish
As Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi’s younger daughter, who married against his wishes, moved the Delhi High Court seeking police protection, her family on Monday made it clear that the couple faced no threat whatsoever from them.
“There is absolutely no threat to their [the couple’s] lives from us. We have neither any idea about their whereabouts nor are we searching for them,” Chiranjeevi’s younger brother and popular actor Pavan Kalyan said here.
On the couple apprehending a threat to their lives because Chiranjeevi was an influential person, Kalyan said “we are not in the company of goondas, but have the love and affection of fans. We are not after somebody’s life.”
Accompanied by his supporters and fans, Kalyan went to the Jubilee Hills police station here and surrendered his revolver. “I am surrendering the weapon, so that there is no scope for misunderstanding in any quarter. We wish Srija a happy life wherever she is,” the actor said.
Kalyan said the entire family was shocked by Srija’s decision to walk out of her home.
