Is Bhansali bashing the latest fad in the film industry?
As if the comments about Saawariya weren’t enough, even Black has all over again come under the scanner.
Aamir Khan insists that in Bhansali’s films, “the form seems to be heavier” while debating over the surreal treatment in Black . Even the most humble conversation over dinner is a tempting occasion for many to unceremoniously criticise Saawariya as being a Bhansali ‘blue’ film.
Bhavani Iyer, the writer of Black , agrees that Bhansali has now become a target. “Nobody can argue with success. Since Black was successful, nobody said anything. And now that Saawariya hasn’t done well, people want to rake up old issues. If people really had problems, why didn’t they speak out two years back? As a person, Sanjay keeps to himself and isn’t very media savvy. The lack of accessibility to Sanjay makes many want to target him just to see if the comments can get him to speak,” said Iyer, adding, “I find it distasteful to get into any comparison between Black and Taare Zameen Par . Both Black and TZP can be sensitive or insensitive in their own space without any comparisons.”
A Bollywood film-maker, on conditions of anonymity, agreed that suddenly Bhansali has become a favourite punching bag. “I found Khan’s Fanaa to be a very old fashioned treatment of a visually impaired girl. It had zero research on the visually impaired. Both OSO and Saawariya were equally bad films. But while Sawaariya was panned, OSO was touted as the ultimate answer to entertainment. Bhansali, I feel, should gracefully accept criticism.”
Talk of bad times and numerologists are only too happy to predict Bhansali’s future. According to numerologist Anupam V Kapil, “He is kumbha rashi . In his chart, Sun, Moon and Jupiter have been badly afflicted. Sun and Moon represent one’s public image and emotions. His relationships will also be under a cloud till April 15, 2008. After that, things will automatically start getting resolved. His best well-wishers will be his friends and not his blood relatives.”
Kapil also has some suggestions for Bhansali to wade through his bad times. “He should feed a brown cow with wheat and jaggery roti . He can also offer beedi and liquor to street sweepers or crematorium guards. He will get immediate relief if he does this on five consecutive Wednesdays.”
Wonder whether Bhansali will have the last laugh now?
