New Delhi: At least 18 people were killed and dozens injured in four blasts that rocked busy markets on Saturday, marking the arrival of the killer SIMI to the national capital.
Home Ministry sources described the strikes as SIMI's Operation BAD — Bangalore-Ahmedabad-Delhi strike. The Indian Mujahideen, a front organisation for SIMI, sent an e-mail claiming responsibility for the blasts.
The blasts at Ghaffar Market at Karol Bagh, Connaught Place and at Greater Kailash took place in quick succession.
The first blast occurred at Ghaffar Market where at least 20 people were injured. They were rushed to the nearby RML Hospital.
Immediately after, two blasts occurred at Connaught Place — in Central Park and at Barakhambha Road — in which at least 10 people were injured.
Later, another explosion rocked M-Block Market in Greater Kailash-I.
Initially police believed the first blast, in Karol Bagh, was the result of a CNG cylinder explosion in an auto. The nature of the second blast in Greater Kailash and the two blasts in Connaught Place are not immediately known.
The impact of the blast in Karol Bagh could be gauged by the fact that an auto was flung into the air and got tangled in overhead electrical wires.
Four blasts in 45 minutes, starting 6.15 pm
KAROL BAGH
The first blast took place at Gaffar Market in Karol Bagh at 6.15 pm. Initial reports said the blast had taken place in an auto rickshaw, and had injured around 20 people.
CONNAUGHT PLACE
Eyewitness accounts said two blasts in Connaught Place took place in Central Park and Barakhamba Road within a span of 10 seconds. Both bombs had apparently been kept inside dustbins. An estimated 20 people were injured.
GREATER KAILASH I
Another blast took place in front of a shop in M-Block Market. Police said the explosive there was of low intensity.
