AIIMS ready to contain dengue outbreak

NEW DELHI: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences has drawn up a contingency plan to control sudden outbreak of dengue after two of its doctors were tested positive for the mosquito-borne disease.

So far, about 88 people have been tested positive in the AIIMS, hospital administration said on Monday.

"We have made a complete Dengue Contingency plan to provide fastest relief in shortest time to any number of patients, if there is an increase in dengue cases," Dr D K Sharma, AIIMS Medical Superintendent said.

In case of an emergency, we have complete arrangements to press additional nursing staff, doctors and other facilities, Sharma said.

"The number of dengue cases in the capital are normal and there is no need to panic. MCD has already earmarked 38 government and four private hospitals in the city that can provide immediate treatment to dengue patients in emergency," said Dr Bir Singh, Nodal Officer for dengue in AIIMS.

Singh said the AIIMS compound is totally 'mosquito breeding free' and no dengue cases have been reported from the hospital compound.

In the last nine months, about 100 people suspected to be afflicted with dengue were admitted in the AIIMS, out of which 37 were tested positive. A doctor and a medical student are among those affected with dengue.

While 50 patients in OPD were tested positive during regular tests.

"Among these one-third cases were from Delhi and the rest from the neighbouring states," Singh said.

AIIMS is already running a Disease Prevention Outbreak Response Cell and Disease Information helpline to tackle any emergency situation, Singh said.
