Wordly wise!

There's more to Mallika than just sizzling on the big screen. The actress, a typical Haryanvi girl, taught Tanaaz Lal how to talk in Haryanvi for Lal's role in Sanjay Chhel's comedy film Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam.

Tanaaz, who had difficulty talking in Haryanvi, finally managed to get it right under the able tutelage of Mallika Sherwat. Tanaaz hit it off with Mallika on the sets. When Tanaaz had a problem speaking in Mallika's native language, Mallika came to the rescue. Every day Mallika would check on Tanaaz's diction and give her inputs to improve the same.

Tanaaz says, “I play a non-glamorous Haryanvi girl. And boy, I had a tough time pronouncing words in Haryanvi. Also, I couldn't get the accent right. I would practice dialogue at home, rehearse them in my vanity van.”

How did Mallika help her out? “Well, she helped me with intonation, and then she taught me which words or letters to stress on. Haryanvi is very different from the Hindi that we speak. Mallika would give her inputs. She would correct me and constantly keep updating my limited Haryanvi vocabulary.

We bonded very well over this. I am a fast learner, too, and I am glad that she was impressed with me, finally. She was of great help, for sure.”

As for her experience of learning the language, Tanaaz says, “Haryanvi is a somewhat rough language. There is a lot of usage of the word 'bhains' (buffalo). When I first began, I would be very conscious as it sounded like I were using bad language.”
