After playing Colin Farrell’s mother Olympias in Alexander and a pregnant Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart, Angelina Jolie’s playing a mum again.
And this time around, she’s the ruthlessly seductive mother of the demon Grendel, who is out to avenge her son’s death at the hands of the warrior Beowulf. In an exclusive with BT, she talks about her role as a seductress out for revenge
What can the audience expect from the movie Beowulf?
It has a great theme and it is sexy and it is visually going to be, not just pretty to watch, but really beautiful and cool to watch.
What do you think of your character as Grendel’s Mother?
I loved her. I mean, I think that partially I’m a mom, and she’s a mom, really, at heart. Yes, she’s a monster and all these other things but she is kind of the essence of it. Grendel is a full-grown man, but there’s something slower about him, there’s something childlike about him, and so there’s something easy to love and you know you’re going to be able to love him, as much as he’s a monster. I didn’t kind of think about the good and evil side of it or whether I was right or wrong, just that, you know, you revenge your son’s death.
What do you think about the way she looks?
I love that there’s this transition you know, that she’s not really beautiful. She can morph into something that is appealing to whatever people perceive as beauty, but she is this other creature.
How was it working with Crispin Glover who plays Grendel?
It’s easy for me to play a mother, to be maternal, but not necessarily be maternal with somebody who’s even older than me. He showed up with such conviction, he had made such strong choices as this character with a certain sweetness and he opened himself up in this really sweet way that allowed me to feel really maternal and, and so we met on this really nice level, and it was lovely. It was very sweet.
How was it working with Ray Winstone?
He’s just a great guy that you just want to hang out with. He’s just got that wonderful quality, and he’s a wonderful family man and he’s just funny. He’s really funny!
