Two policemen were injured when an associate of a terror suspect opened fire on them at busy Santosh Nagar in the old city here on Wednesday.
Constables Jafar and Rama Raju were hurt when the unidentified men opened fire after they came across the policemen, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Zone) Atul Singh said.
The injured policemen were admitted to a super-specialty hospital in the city.
Singh said the antecedents of the miscreants, who were about six in number, were being ascertained. Residents of the locality said the youth were local residents.
Followers of Vicaruddin, a former SIMI activist, fired three rounds with a country-made revolver when policemen went to their hideout to nab him, city Commissioner of Police B Prasada Rao told reporters at the spot.
Acting on a tip-off, a three-member police team went to Santosh Nagar, a communally-sensitive area, to arrest Vicaruddin, who has been missing for the last one year.
On seeing the policemen, one of the associates of Vicaruddin opened fire near a telephone booth, injuring Head Constables Rama Raju and Jaffar.
Both were rushed to a nearby super-specialty hospital and the condition of Rama Raju is serious.
Vicaruddin, who fled the scene after the incident, was a member of Darsgah Jihad-e-Shahadat (DJS), a local fringe outfit with suspected terror links.
Asked about his links with ISI, the Police Commissioner said "It will come out in the investigation."
