A dramatic high-speed chase that began near American Canyon led to the arrest of a 20-year-old Richmond man Saturday night.
American Canyon Police officers arrested Hooman Beytollah on suspicion of felony reckless failure to yield to police, resisting arrest, possession and transportation of controlled substances and possession for sale of controlled substances.
At 10:30 p.m., Saturday, an American Canyon Police officer spotted a 1995 gray Nissan Altima with a broken tail light and a non-functioning brake light according to police reports. The officer first noticed the vehicle, driven by Beytollah, traveling south on Highway 29 in American Canyon, and attempted to make a vehicle stop.
Beytollah stopped for the officer just south of Mini Drive in Vallejo, American Canyon Police Sgt. Mike Collins said.
“When the officer approached the car, the driver and two other occupants were all making suspicious movements,” Collins said. “The driver was tucking something into his waste area and the officer told all subjects to stay still and show their hands. The officer could see a baggie with pills inside and a baggie with white powder on the driver’s lap. He ordered the occupants to keep their hands up (and) the driver shifted into drive and left (driving) southbound 29 into Vallejo.”
A chase began and spilled onto Highway 37 west, reaching speeds of 75 miles per hour Collins said. Beytollah left the highway and traveled south on Sacramento Street. He continued to drive at a high rate of speed and drove on the wrong side of the road, illegally passing cars and running a red light Collins said.
Beytollah then pulled the car up in front of a home at Sacramento and Mississippi Streets, stopping long enough to let his passengers out of the car, Collins said. While the passengers ran in different directions, Beytollah remained in the car and attempted to drive away, and backed into the right front of the officer’s patrol car. Beytollah tried to leave the car, but was cut off by the officer, Collins said.
After repeated warnings, the officer tasered Beytollah and, with the help of Vallejo Police, took him into custody. Beytollah was in possession of methamphetamine and ecstasy pills, according to police.
Napa County Sheriff’s K-9 officers helped search the area for the passengers but only managed to locate some of their discarded clothing, Collins said.
