Chandigarh: For long many tax defaulters in the state have managed to dodge the tax collecting authorities, depriving the Government of timely revenue. But now the Haryana government has planned a new scheme for the recovery of arrears of the tax defaulters.
According to the plan, the state government would now depend on the informers to find out the tax defaulters. These informers would be duly awarded for their information. According to sources, the state government will pay the informers as much as 5 per cent of the total money recovered from the tax defaulters.
Under the plan, the name and identity of the informer would be kept strictly confidential. According to Haryana Finance Minister Birender Singh, the new scheme is likely to yield good results, but the officials of the revenue department would have to keep a strict vigil, he said.
During the current financial year, the state government has a target of Rs 11,840 crore. So far Rs 6,139 crore has already been collected in the first seven months, which is 51.81 per cent of the year’s target. The tax collection for the current financial year likely to be Rs 2,000 crore more than that of the last year.
Incidentally, Haryana is one of the best financially managed states in the country. For the last 5 years it has maintained a growth rate of 20 per cent in tax collection. According to sources, the state could increase the limit on luxury tax from Rs 30 crore to Rs 100 crore by identifying new areas of taxation.
The target of passenger and goods tax for the current financial year is Rs 393 crore, out of which Rs 208 crore tax had been collected so far.
The taxation department is trying to computerise the existing system with the objective of improving transparency and efficiency of the department. Birender Singh has asked the Excise and Taxation department to keep a close eye on the tax collection. He has also asked the department to hold regular meetings every month to review tax collection in the state.
Talking to The Indian Express, Ramendra Jakhu, FC Excise and Taxation, said the computerisation process is well on its way. “Online filing of returns will be possible in Haryana from January. We have asked for Rs 59 crore from the central government for the total project. Part of the cost will be borne by the state government,’’ he said.
