Natasha Richardson 'critically injured' in skiing accident

Actor Natasha Richardson was said to be in a critical condition in hospital today after being badly injured in a skiing accident in Canada.

She reportedly suffered a brain injury and has been transferred to a Montreal hospital having first been treated near the luxury Mont Tremblant resort in Quebec.

Her husband, actor Liam Neeson, flew from filming in Toronto to be with Richardson, 45, following the accident yesterday.

Richardson, daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and late film director Tony Richardson, married Neeson in 1994 after they both appeared in the film Nell. They have two sons.

She won a Tony award for best actress for her role as Sally Bowles in Cabaret on Broadway in 1998 and her film credits include The Parent Trap and The Handmaid's Tale. In January, she and her mother played together in a one-night benefit version in New York of Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music. Neeson has been working on the film Chloe with Julianne Moore.

The website Irish Central quoted a spokesman for the film as telling Canadian television: "We don't have any details at this time but we hope for the best and our thoughts and prayers are with Natasha and Liam and their family."

The Montreal Gazette said this morning that a staff member at Sacre Coeur hospital in Montreal confirmed Richardson had been in its intensive care unit on Monday night but was no longer there at 11pm.
