Madea Goes to Jail Latest Branch in Tyler Perry's Empire

Tyler Perry has been slowly conquering the movie and television world for years, building up a full fledged, one man empire. The cornerstone of the Perry empire is Madea, the ass-kicking, cap-shooting grandmother that Perry has played in drag for years, both in theater and

in film. Madea made Perry, but has never really been caught for her various law-breaking antics. Madea Goes To Jail changes all that, as it opens today.

Perry brings Madea back for the fourth time in his movie series. Madea Goes To Jail is her first appearance since a cameo in Meet the Browns, and a few cameos in Perry's TV series House of Payne. But Madea Goes To Jail is her first starring role since Madea's Family Reunion.

Perry brings Madea back after some relatively sub-par performances for recent serious films like Meet the Browns, Daddy's Little Girls and The Family That Preys.

But of course, Madea and her other family members that Perry plays aren't the only part of Madea Goes To Jail. The usual spiritual crisises, multi-character dramas, battles with drugs and the law, and soulful redemptions are sure to be on display. Madea Goes To Jail also has Judge Mathis and Dr. Phil go toe-to-toe with Madea.

In addition, Madea Goes To Jail offers former Cosby kid Keisha Knight Pulliam as a jailed drug-addicted prostitute, of all things. Her road to redemption involves Madea, an attractive assistant D.A. played by Derek Luke, and his evil wife.

Though the marquee and title promises that Madea Goes To Jail, it may actually only be a short plot point in the movie itself. According to the sole review for Madea Goes To Jail on Rotten Tomatoes, by Brian Orndorf, the movie should have been called "Madea Goes to Jail Sometime In The Third Act, So Here's This Nonsense about a Hooker and her Gang Rape Enabler."

Critics are not generally fans of Perry's past movies or Madea, going back to their film debut Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Despite the fact that reviews aren't kind to Perry in his films, or his TV shows, his cult audience and empire grows and grows after each new project.

Therefore, lousy reviews for Madea Goes To Jail won't stop Perry from providing another feather in his cap, or from likely winning the box office this weekend. Nonetheless, the movie was not screened for critics until today.

Perry puts out at least one or two new movies a year nowadays, so his next project should be coming very soon,

with or without Madea.
