People know me as Bindya: Shilpa

You’ve seen her throwing attitude, behaving like the gunda of girls hockey team, inspiring defiance in her teammates against the coach Kabir Khan in Chak De! India, until one transforming moment on field.
But this is not what Shilpa Shukla, popularly known as Bindya Naik, is all about. She says, “All the attitude was acting! I’m not at all an attitude laden girl.”

On her recent visit to the city, Shilpa Shukla spoke to LT on her Bindya Naik image and lots more.

Shilpa is on the look out for newer roles so that she can break Bindya Naik's image. “People know me as Bindya Naik. Though it’s a compliment that my role left such an impact that people remember me as Bindya. But I want to move forward and do different and more challenging roles,” says Shilpa.

Ask her about her upcoming projects and she replies, “I’m currently shooting for the movie Junction opposite Abhay Deol. The good thing about my role in the film is that it’s quite different from the one I played in Chak De! India . I play a mellow and sweet girl in the movie. And this is what I wanted to do. I have clearly said no to negative characters now.”

Talking of challenges that an actor has to face, Shilpa says, “An actor gets typecast if he/she doesn’t” change gears. An artiste has to be versatile.” And her aspirations acquire a new role. “I would like to explore more of my acting abilities. I’d love to play a boxer, a glam doll and everything that a good actor can,” she says.

She has been in this field since last eight-years and has gone through all the grind. “I have worked hard in the past and will continue to do so in the future as well. I don’t believe in having a PR who would create gossip about me in order to bring me into limelight. I would rather let my work do all the talking,” says she.

Apart from admiring Shah Rukh Khan, Shilpa also adulates Irrfan Khan, Pankaj Kapur and Aamir Khan for their on-screen brilliance. She even throws light on the responsibility of directors to enrich and develop the taste of people. “ Chak De! India is a movie that is rarely made and will always be remembered,” she says, adding, “We should make movies that are tasteful and laden with brilliant performances so that people recognise and develop a liking for tasteful cinema.”
