DETROIT (Reuters) - New Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz named Gunther Cunningham as defensive coordinator of the team that failed to win a game last season, the Lions said on their website (www.detroitlions.com) on Wednesday.
Cunningham, a 40-year coaching veteran who has spent 27 seasons working in the National Football League including two years as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, most recently served as the Chiefs' defensive coordinator from 2004-2008.
The 62-year-old Cunningham coached alongside Schwartz on the staff of the Tennessee Titans before he went back to Kansas City for his second stint with the Chiefs.
The Lions became the first team to finish the NFL regular season with a 0-16 record and ranked last among the 32 teams in points allowed and yards allowed last term.
