Tina Fey may be the talk at the dinner table because of her impersonations of Sarah Palin during the recent presidential campaigns, but it’s her show 30 Rock that has garnered three Golden Globe awards (and even more talk) recently.
30 Rock is an increasingly popular comedy series that airs on NBC. Originally created by actress and comedian Tina Fey, 30 Rock takes place on the set of a fictional live sketch comedy series that airs on NBC. The name “30 Rock” comes from the address of NBC’s home in New York, the GE building at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The first ever episode aired on October 11, 2006. Its third season began on October 30, 2008 and was recently picked up for a fourth season with episodes airing in 2009 and 2010.
30 Rock Background
The concept for 30 Rock first came about when Tina Fey was working as one of the lead writers for Saturday NIght Live in 2002. Her original idea was that it would be a sitcom about Cable News, but NBC entertainment President Kevin Reilly had another idea. He encouraged Fey to write a show that was based on her own unique experience as an actress and writer. The show was subsequently reworked to revolve around an SNL style skit show.
The show initially received some attention from critics as well as a few awards, but was largely a “cult” hit for its first season. It wasn’t until the second season that audiences really started to take notice of this highly entertaining and original show.
The 2009 Golden Globe Awards
At the January 2009 Golden Globe awards, 30 Rock won Golden Globes in the categories of best lead actress in a comedy series for Tina Fey, best lead actor in a comedy series for Alec Baldwin, and best comedy series.
Past Awards and Nominations
Truly the “little series that could,” 30 Rock has been racking up nominations and awards since its inception, despite a relatively low profile at first. In its premiere season, it brought home the primetime Emmy for outstanding comedy series, with actress Elaine Stritch earning an Emmy in 2007 for her work in one episode. Fey and Baldwin were nominated for the awards they would win later at the 2008 Emmys. It was also nominated for the category of Outstanding Writing. It ultimately received four Creative Arts Emmy awards.
In its second season, 30 Rock was nominated at the Golden Globes as best television series for a comedy or musical, while Fey brought home the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical. The series also took home numerous other awards, including one from the Producers Guild of America, the Danny Thomas Producer of the Year Award in Episodic Television.
All in all, 30 Rock collected 17 Emmy nominations for its second season. It was also the most nominated comedy series during any single Emmy year.
Last but not least, 30 Rock also brought home the Peabody Award in 2008.
