Entertainment website TMZ.com has obtained a photo of a bruised and battered Rihanna it claims was taken just hours after she was severely beaten by her boyfriend, R & B star Chris Brown. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating how the picture was leaked to the press, suggesting that it is in fact legitimate. Several photoshopped pictures have surfaced since the alleged beating the night before the Grammy Awards.

If this is an accurate depiction of her injuries, Brown needs to be charged with assault and battery as soon as possible. This sort of violence against women simply cannot be tolerated, and the fact that theirs is such a high-profile relationship with the potential to deeply influence impressionable young people makes Brown's actions all the more horrifying.

The formerly squeaky-clean star, who posed for the Got Milk? campaign and was held up as the shining example of a positive role model in hip-hop, quite simply deserves to be professionally ruined. This wasn't Britney Spears shaving her head or Mel Gibson launching into an anti-semitic tirade, this was criminal violence in its worst form.
