Bon Jovi to headline Royal Variety Performance

American rock veterans Bon Jovi and Kiwi soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa will headline this year’s Royal Variety Performance in Liverpool.

Pop’s most polarising performer James Blunt, Spanish-American chart-topper Enrique Iglesias, mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins and former Royal Ballet principal Darcey Bussell are also part of the line-up, announced today by ITV.

Continuing his astounding rise from phone salesman to classical superstar, Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts will sing for the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at the December event.

TV personality Philip Schofield and former X Factor host Kate Thornton will present the performance. Today the pair spoke of their excitement at taking part in a show that can attract a television audience of over 10 million.

Thornton said: “ It’s a British institution that unites some of the biggest acts in the world for one night only and I am honoured to be presenting one of Britain's biggest shows.”

Schofield added:” There is no other show that boasts such a diverse mix of acts and this year will be no exception.”

The Liverpool staging continues the recently-established tradition of hosting the performance outside of London. Cardiff, Edinburgh and Birmingham have hosted the event in recent years, but Liverpool was an obvious choice for this year's performance, as the city is celebrating its 800th birthday, and from January will become the European Capital of Culture.

The capital, however, won’t be forgotten. London’s West End will be represented by the cast of new musical Hairspray, who will perform an extract from the already-successful show.

ITV Production’s controller of entertainment Mark Wells said: “It’s great to be going to Liverpool in 2007. Entertainment, like football, is in the city’s blood and I know the Liverpool audience will make us feel very welcome for what is still the greatest night of entertainment in the year.”

The performance, staged in honour of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund, whose patron is the Queen, will be screened on ITV1 during December.

All tickets for The 2007 Royal Variety Performance are only available from the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund.
