The Longest Day has been voted the best war film by British veterans in a poll conducted by Sky Movies Classics and Forces Reunited. The movie was released in 1962 and revolves around D-Day in Normandy in 1944.
It stars legends like Richard Burton, John Wayne, Sean Connery and Richard Todd.
The 1998 hit Saving Private Ryan directed by Steven Spielberg came in second in the poll.
The next three on the list were A Bridge Too Far , The Dam Busters and The Cruel Sea , reports ananova.com.
Todd served in the British 6th Airborne Division during the Second World War. He was one of the first British soldiers to land in Normandy on D-Day and served under Major John Howard, the man he actually plays in the film.
He said, “What sets The Longest Day apart from so many popular and successful war films is that it is grounded on fact. It has the honesty and attention to detail that is often missing from the extravagant, special effects-ridden war films of today.”
