Sachin is my fave cricketer: Deepika

The ‘star’ mantle is yet to settle onto her slender shoulders. Even as we begin the interview, photographers are clamouring outside to snap the newest twinkle on the Bollywood block.

But Deepika Padukone is quite unfrazzled. “Not at all. I am still the same old Deepika,” is how she laughs away the ‘Do you feel you’re a star?’ question. But she does handle the interview with the poise and finesse of a veteran. She “tsks, tsks” away this statement too with a “But I’m a quiet, composed and poised person.”

Was she as composed when the raves about her performance began pouring in? She says with a laugh, “Oh, I was pretty excited. And now, I don’t want the excitement to die. I totally focused on acting my part, and gave it my all. So, now it feels great to be appreciated. Hopefully, I’ll be able to better myself next time.”

Does that mean she’s lost to the modelling world now? “I plan to juggle both, modelling and acting,” she states seriously, “But acting does take up so much time.” And this after just one film! “I have a couple of other offers. But right now, I am not allowed to speak about them,” she adds.

By now, the media can’t wait any longer. And so, Deepika goes to meet them. Must give it to her. Not a blink of an eye, not a single taken aback gasp... she meets the blinding array of exploding flashbulbs with a confident gait and a dimpled smile. A smile that remains firmly in place for the next half an hour, as she poses and gives bytes.

Later, we get chatting again. So, now does she feel like a star? “There’s a lot more recognition now. After all Bollywood is the biggest and most happening thing in India right now. And I am glad to be a part of it,” she admits.

Well, recognition has brought other things in its wake too. Like a certain dashing young cricketer’s heart!

So, what does she think of Team India’s captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, sending her special invites to watch T20 matches? Out comes that dimpled smile again, “I wouldn’t know anything about that,” she says. But we can’t really leave it at that, can we? What does she think of Team India’s performance? “Everyone’s playing really well.” A diplomatic answer. Another try – someone asks her, any special messages for the captain of the team? “I wish the whole team the best. They’re going great guns.” Oh well, one last try... So, who’s her fave Team India player? “Sachin Tendulkar,” she says, laughing.
