ashish choudhary: EMI

CAST: Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, Malaika Arora Khan, Urmila Matondkar, Ashish Choudhary; DIRECTOR: Saurabh Kabra

There are two films in EMI — one, in which Malaika Arora Khan comes on every 10 minutes shaking her booty, in clothes getting skimpier by the minute, and another, in which four old men have a genuine conversation about their children in which the latter are allowed to have ambitions and to travel abroad without breaking their parents’ hearts.

The sad part is that while Kabra could nicely shake and mix up the two, he makes no effort to. The two films run parallel in EMI, the good parts being interspersed with the truly appalling.

And Kabra is working with a nice idea here and a fairly good script involving four different families who have all taken loans and are now defaulting on their EMIs for varied reasons. One a newly married and quickly separated couple; another a DJ who spends more than he earns; the third a father who has borrowed to send his son abroad; and fourth a woman paying off the mob to get her husband’s suicide turned into a murder to claim the Rs 2-crore insurance.

There are some very funny moments, like the smooth-talking personal bankers who won’t be fazed by lecherous customers or cautious ones; the innovative gangsters who help you in getting bank loans so you can pay up their money, in installments; Sanjay Dutt, who can now do these roles of a kind-hearted gangster in his sleep and who here, in the placement of his expensive dark glasses a little too unevenly down his nose, conveys both his ambitions and limitations; and his gang of small, Munnabhai-esque lumpens.

And there are some very unfunny ones: Rampal, confusing himself once again as a serious musician (in a tweed hat, for God’s sake); Choudhary’s twitching moustache that has more emotion than the rest of his face combined; Urmila’s grieving-widow act dressed in expensive saris, including a transparent red piece, designer suits and twirling wine; and Malaika’s ever-shortening wardrobe.
