In New York, members of the Chabad-Lubavitch ultra-orthodox Jewish community are in mourning after hearing the deaths of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka, who were killed in the terrorist attack at Nariman House.
The couple's baby boy Moshe was rescued from Nariman house. On Saturday baby Moshe turns two.
Hope turned to despair at the Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters in Brooklyn, as word spread that 29-year-old Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, and his wife, Rivka were confirmed dead after being taken hostage in the Mumbai terror attacks.
"We are going to miss him very dearly. He was a very special person, him and his wife," said Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, vice chairman, Chabad's education and social services arm.
In 2003, the newly married Holtzberg's moved from Brooklyn to manage the Mumbai chapter of the Chabad - an open house for Jews - on their mission to spread Judaism to Jews around the globe.
"It was his dream to be an emissary. That was his dream and I think he was very happy to have fulfilled it," said Yeshaya Spielman, Rabbi Holtzberg's nephew.
In their Home in the United States, prayer services were held in their memory and for their young son Moshe who was rescued by the nanny and has been united with his grandparents.
"Today, he became an orphan without a dad and mom to lovingly embrace him and celebrate with him," said Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, chairman, Chabad's education and social services arm.
Based on the success of the Holzberg's experience in Mumbai, Chabad authorities met last week to discuss opening up another Chabad centre in Bangalore. The couple will now be buried in Israel.
For the past two days, members of the Chabad headquarters in New York have been glued to the television and the Internet trying to separate fact from rumour.
Now, they are united in grief and a promise to provide a loving and caring environment for young Moshe who lost his parents just days before his second birthday.
