MUMBAI: Clearly, the warmth was beginning to get stifling. The terror attack on Mumbai’s Jewish centre in Nariman House appears to have been
aimed at breaking the increasing bonhomie between India and Israel.
The increased collaboration between the two countries is evident from the fact that two Indian companies are on the verge of signing major deals with the Israeli government. A large delegation of Israeli businessmen and industrialists is also scheduled to visit Mumbai in December.
According to government sources, two major Indian industrial houses have won mega contracts from the Israeli government. One of these will provide vehicles to Israel Defence Forces (IDF) while the other is planning to set up a large software park there. This is the first time the IDF will buy a vehicle built by an automaker that is not US or German.
The recent attack, however, may force both governments to reschedule the delegation’s visit. A central government official indicated to ETthat this is being seen not as a random attack but a carefully targeted one. “There is growing interest in both countries to collaborate in numerous areas. Many large Indian companies are finalising plans to set up or expand operations in Israel. The attack on Chabad Centre in Mumbai is an attempt to snap this relationship,” said the official.
