The need to obtain permission from the civic body to proceed with digging and laying of cables is delaying the provision of internet connections, reports the Bangalore Mirror.
Delays in the granting of permission from Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) mean that it can take more than three months to get a connection. As a result, over 6,000 applications for internet connections from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) are pending. Senior officials of the BSNL’s Bangalore division blamed BBMP’s indifferent attitude in granting permission for digging operations, causing a huge loss of revenue and customers for private service providers.
The BSNL officials also alleged that private players pay huge amounts to BBMP to prevent BSNL from obtaining permission for laying cables. A BSNL official said, "Being adjudged the best telecom district, it is a shame on our part that we can’t provide speedy connections to the customers. We are totally dependent on BBMP on this. Customers may wait for maximum one month. After that we are sure to lose them to the private players who offer quick services, as they don’t need to do any digging for laying cables."
Denying the allegations, Basavaraj, assistant executive engineer of BBMP, said, "We generally sanction permission within 20 to 25 days. In some cases, it will take longer, as the BSNL officials fail to furnish some technical details. They should accompany us to the spot too." Calling the allegations completely baseless, he said there wasn't enough cooperation from the central government undertaking. X
