A walk-in-exam option for students

NEW DELHI: In order to make exam patterns more flexible and learner-friendly, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is offering
walk-in-exam options to students.

This will make it possible for students to take exams at any time of the year. Students need to register online 15 days prior to the day they want to take the exam. “The exam will be held every Sunday at the regional centres of Ignou,” informed Srikant Mohapatra, registrar, evaluation division, Ignou.

The university holds examination every six months - in June and December. “So long, any student who missed the exam or wanted to reappear had to wait for six months. With this option now available, students can take the exam any time provided they fullfil the formal eligibility criteria. In order to be eligible, a student must have completed a set number of hours and also the assigned number of home based projects. However, the eligibility rules may differ from exam to exam,” said Mohapatra.

Talking about question papers, he said, the question paper will be generated through software and will be scanned by the regional director. “Further, with each student receiving a different set of question paper, it will reduce the possibility of malpractice. The examination will be conducted under camera surveillance,” he said.

Right now, the option will be available only to students who are taking the certificate course in organic farming or the certificate course in guidance. “We are planning to bring all the subjects under this new scheme within a span of three months,” he said.

Registration of students, allotment of the dates and the issuing of hall tickets to examinees for the walk-in examination will be done online.

The initiative was launched to mark the foundation day of the university, which Ignou recently celebrated. An e-Learning platform, 'Sustainable Action and Virtual Education' (SAVE), for an Appreciation Programme on Sustainability Science was also launched along with two special booklets on Ignou.
