Gang of domestic helps held for robbing houses

Chandigarh, November 04 The chandigarh Police on Tuesday claimed to have busted a gang of three thieves who used to loot household items after getting employed as servants in the houses.

Police officers said the modus operandi was to commit the theft within three days after being hired as servants to evade police verification. Police have also recovered four laptops, a DVD player, a mobile phone and a cycle from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Bhuvan (22), Kishan (21) and Ramesh Chand (23), all natives of Almora district. Bhuvan was leading the gang and is also said to be involved in several cases of theft and snatchings in the city. They all were residing in Nayagaon for the past few years.

Deputy Superintendent of Police J S Khaira said the accused used to follow the advertisements in the newspapers about the requirement of cooks and servants in houses.

“They used to identify families with three to four persons, so that their job is easy. They gained confidence of their masters and when the family members went out, they used to loot cash, valuables and other household items,” the DSP said.

Station House Officer of Sector-39 Police Station Inspector Anokh Singh said a police party had set up a routine checkpost in Sector 42 on Monday night. “Police officers found that Bhuvan and Ramesh were coming on their cycle with a bag. They signalled them to stop and searched the bag. They recovered two laptops from their possession. Bhuvan could not justify the ownership of the laptops and was brought to the police station,” he added.

During investigations, Bhuvan revealed the address of his brother-in-law, Ramesh Chand. Police raided Ramesh’s place and recovered two more laptops, a DVD player and a mobile phone. Ramesh has also been arrested.

DSP Khaira said that after committing five to six thefts, they used to visit Uttranchal for easy disposal of the stolen items. “Also, they used to steal whatever they could find in the house without a lock. They never broke open any lock or an almirah. Usually people keep their mobile phones and laptops openly in their house,” he said.

A week ago, Anokh Singh said that Bhuvan had committed a theft in a house in Sector 42, when the owners had gone to the Gurdwara around 11 am. He has various theft and snatching cases registered against him in CIA Branch, police stations in Sector 11, 17 and 34.

Police also managed to arrest two other thieves — Sandeep and Satish — and recovered six mobile phones and two earrings from their possession. They were arrested from their house after a tip-off, Khaira said.
